In order to ensure that all our customers are able to enjoy the benefits of our high-quality Internet access and to protect them from irresponsible or illegal activities we ask that everyone follow these rules of the road.

Email

Each email account is allocated 20 MB temporary storage for email files. We have a lot of storage, but it is not unlimited will fill up if not attended to.

Email files older that 60 days are subject to deletion.

Email accounts not accessed for 90 days are subject to deletion.

Email files in email accounts which exceed the 20 MB limit are subject to deletion. The oldest email files will be deleted first until the total MB used is less than 20.

Mail destined for email accounts which are over the 20 MB limit may be rejected with failure message "mailbox is full".

Forbidden Activities

No robots. A robot is a software program that automatically visits sites on the Net collecting whatever information it is looking for. If you aren't familiar with robots, you probably don't need to be concerned with this one. If you have a legitimate need for a robot, please contact our support staff.

No spamming via email. To spam is to send unsolicited commercial e-mail. Like regular junk mail, the recipients don't like it. And because it is easy to send unsolicited e-mail, the potential for abuse is large. Not only that, some recipients get angry enough to mail bomb the senders of unsolicited e-mail. Any mail bombs would affect us too, so spamming is STRICTLY forbidden. Also, using a COINET e-mail address to collect responses from unsolicited e-mail is prohibited.

No spamming via Usenet. Usenet (newsgroups) are often inundated with useless and off-topic commercial solicitations. COINET customers must obey the charters of any groups they choose to post in. Most charters forbid the posting of commercials, so it's best to just not even try. Sending the same article to numerous off-topic newsgroups is also forbidden, and we may CANCEL any such articles that we find.

No Mail bombing. Just to be very clear about this, sending of large volumes of unsolicited e-mail to ANYONE is prohibited.

No impersonation. Disguising your true identity or impersonating any other person (or company) through the use of forged headers or by any other means is prohibited.

No Public Porn. No, we are not dictating morality, if you want to privately send an off-color file to your friend that is your business. But, if you put porn on one of our servers and make its presence known, it shall be considered a commercial porn site. Our monthly fees for commercial porn sites start at $1000 and go up from there. This is not a joke, and $1000+ is not at all unreasonable considering that a commercial porn site could easily swamp our Internet connection or that of anyone else in Central Oregon.

No 'Loaning' of your account. Use of your account by someone not under your direct control (a member of your immediate family, or someone who works for you and is accessing the Internet on behalf of your business) is NOT OK. This is especially so for accounts with 'unlimited hours of use'. If you do 'loan' your account, you also run the risk of incurring a duplicate login (see duplicate logins above).

No Resale of Services. From your computer and through your COINET access account you may not offer any public information service, such as running a Web server or FTP server. (Note that this is different than providing a public information service on a COINET server, which you may do. Contact us for details.)

No 'Hacking'. Attempts, whether successful or not, to gain access to any computer system, or customer's data, without consent is prohibited.

No Network-Unfriendly Activities. Just in case we missed something, any activity which would adversely affect the ability of other people or systems to use COINET services or the Internet is prohibited.

Privacy

From time to time it may be necessary for COINET employees to examine system accounting logs and other records to resolve system problems. COINET reserves the right to access an account's mailbox to resolve system problems or mail system errors.

COINET will cooperate with the appropriate legal authorities in investigating illegal activities.

COINET makes no guarantee and assumes no liability for the security of any data on any server including 'secure servers'.

You should know that no computer connected to the Internet should be considered safe from intrusion. All security measures seek to discourage would-be intruders from even trying by making it to difficult to again access. However, if the prize is valuable enough, and intruders have the resources, any system can be compromised.

Because e-mail may pass through many computer systems, it should not be considered at all secure, unless encrypted. And even then, it is only as secure as the encryption method.

COINET does not monitor the activity of accounts except for measurements of system utilization and billing records. However, to promote good Net citizenship, if we become aware of inappropriate use of COINET services, we will take appropriate action.

Our Recourse

If a COINET account is used to violate these rules of the road, we reserve the right to terminate service without notice. Our preferred course of action is to advise the account owner of the inappropriate behavior and the corrective action required. However, flagrant violations will result in immediate termination of service.

In the event that an account is temporarily in-activated as a result of any prohibited activity or non-payment, the account may be subject to reactivation charges and/or deposit requirements to be determined by COINET.
