We developed the modular concept with our first tandem panniers in the late 1980's, as a solution to a simple problem. Tandem panniers that are large enough to provide adequate storage capacity for the gear of two people over a full range of tandem touring conditions, are simply too large to be used on a single bike. Simple problem - simple solution. We developed a unique design that allows the outer two compartments of our 3600-cu. in. tandem models to be removed, by means of two zippers, to create panniers that are appropriate in size for touring on a single bike. With the development of zip-on, zip-off pockets and compartments, the two-panniers-in-one modular concept was born. In a set of front and rear panniers, our modular design creates three effective combinations of panniers: the combination of two pairs of panniers with all pockets in place, the combination with outer pockets removed on the front pair only, and the combination of both panniers with outer pockets removed. The ultimate in versatility.

   We liked the flexibility of being able to change the size of our tandem panniers for different types of touring and commuting so well that we introduced a modular version of our Expedition model in 1993 - the Modular 2800.

DISCOVERY MODULAR 3600 PANNIERS

   When we built our first modular panniers in 1989 they were the only tandem panniers available. Today, our tandem panniers are still the only panniers that have both the stability and capacity required for a full range of tandem touring. The Discovery Modular 3600 is our top-performing tandem model. It features the ultra-stability that is necessary for tandem touring on paved or non-paved roads. There is an extreme difference in the stability of the Modular 3600 and any other large-capacity pannier.

   We designed the Modular 3600 as a system of front and rear panniers, in which each has a different design. The front panniers have an extremely narrow profile with the outer pockets removed, and a capacity of 1900-cu. in. when you shift the panniers to a touring single, or use them for tandem touring when less than full capacity is needed. The rear panniers of the system have a capacity of 2250-cu. in. with their outer compartments removed. Like all Discovery panniers, the Modular 3600 front panniers have elaborately designed mesh pockets, which are replaced by a solid pocket and a compression panel on the rear panniers. The front panniers have highly functional side-pleated compression pockets on the outer face of the primary compartments, which the rear panniers lack. With a total of fourteen pockets and compartments (twelve on rear) the Modular 3600 is the ultimate tandem pannier. They are the most versatile tandem panniers ever built. We recommend that the Modular 3600 be used with Sakkit or Bilenky racks, which provide effective support.

DISCOVERY MODULAR 2800 PANNIERS

   Designed exactly like the 3600, but with less overall capacity. It was designed to be the most versatile pannier for touring singles. The size of the panniers with outer pockets removed is 1800-cu. in. (front) or 2100-cu. in. (rear). The ultimate pannier for a weekend jaunt or an around-the-world odyssey.
